The Palace in the Jungle

While Sita’s story may have concluded in Sita and the Prince of Tigers, her legacy lives on in the sequel.
As Ashok and Neelam live with their family in the palace in the jungle, their life story takes an unusual path, complete with unforeseen detours. Raising children always brings challenges, sometimes arising from unexpected sources. Their family’s destiny remains intertwined with that of the old maharajah’s descendants, and echoes of the past influence the present in surprising ways.
Join Ashok and Neelam as they navigate the growing relationships with their children. They watch them change and develop, knowing that—if they have been successful as parents—the next generation will choose their own paths in the future. The Palace in the Jungle reminds us that even a life full of love is not without sadness, and the best experiences can also make for bittersweet memories.

JODI LEW-SMITH

"Winona Howe has created a lovely work of magical realism in which human thoughts and emotions entwine with the life of tigers in the jungle. Continuing onward from the place where Sita left the story, Ashok and Neelam combine the life of being parents with the unique challenges of living within the wilds of the jungle. Their developing relationships with their children take unexpected turns, forcing them to come to terms with their children making their own choices."

"Howe's The Palace in the Jungle transports you to a beautiful world melding colonial Indian culture with magic realism, providing a satisfying follow-up to Sita and the Prince of Tigers. The world explored in the earlier book is augmented by focusing on subsequent generations who find themselves living in the shadow of their forebears. In Howe's rich narrative technique, characters within the main drama become narrators of individual tales. The result is a satisfying blend of story and meta-story, while the blending of fantasy elements with the novel of manners enriches both genres."

"Howe offers readers a little of everything: the mischief and mayhem of childhood; the life-altering path of finding your soulmate, the heartbreak of losing loved ones, and the power of true friendship. And, of course, we also get to experience a specific magic of tigers that can only be found in this very special jungle."

About the Author

Winona Howe grew up in Oakdale, California where she listened to her grandmother’s stories of pre-1900 ranch life in Nevada, played in the barn and climbed trees. These activities were far preferable to practicing the piano and cleaning her room, duties she tried to avoid.
